Tasting Notes
Kaesler, with its long-standing presence in the Barossa Valley since 1893, has earned a reputation for its dedication to old-vine Shiraz, cultivated on soils that have nurtured vines for generations. The Old Vine Shiraz is sourced from blocks where vines typically exceed 40 years of age, with careful vineyard management emphasizing dry farming, low yields, and a sustainable approach to ensure the true expression of the Barossa terroir. The winemaking is kept deliberately simple - hand-harvesting, open fermentation, and traditional basket pressing - to capture the full depth and character of these exceptional sites.
The 2016 vintage experienced warm, stable conditions, providing ideal ripening and resulting in fruit of great colour, intensity and structure. Following gentle fermentation and extraction, the wine was matured in French and American oak, striking a balance between rich, primary fruit and well-integrated spice. Aromas of blackberry, dark plum, and blueberry are layered with hints of clove, licorice and cocoa. On the palate, the wine is rich and plush, supported by firm but approachable tannins and lively acidity, giving length and a savoury drive to the finish. The 2016 Old Vine Shiraz is an expressive, full-bodied Barossa red - deep, complex and balanced - reflecting both the maturity of the vineyard and the confident, respectful touch of Kaesler’s winemaking team.

Scores
94 / 100"An abundance of flavour with all manner of ripe fruit, compote and baking spices. While the sweet oak needs to settle, everything else is kept in shape by refreshing raspberry-sorbet like acidity."

"Deep, bright red/purple colour and a ripe dark-plum aroma, fruit-driven and bold, the taste intense and focused, direct and powerful, with good concentration, a warmth of alcohol and abundant tannins, but it's quite well proportioned if not exactly elegant, and has a lovely core of fruit sweetness. Smart stuff and very Barossan."

"This has savory, earthy and gently nutty aromas with quite a spicy thread across the rich blackberries and red plums. The palate has smooth, almost creamy texture and shape to the tannins and a composed, red-plum, raspberry and blackberry finish. Medium body. 1961 plantings."
