Scores

"Gracefully opulent and seductively complex, the bouquet shows dark fruit richness, toasty oak, clove, cinnamon and dark cocoa aromas, followed by a concentrated palate displaying terrific weight and plush mouthfeel. Wonderfully framed by beautifully melded tannins, finishing superbly long and stylish. At its best: now to 2037. $120.00. June 2024."

"Here is pure Barossa richness and power expressed with refined poise and a high degree of elegance. It's a result of the best barrel selection to produce a wine that captures so much of the Barossa in a good year. It was small batch fermented before the barrel selection process and shows deep, concentrated and lavishly textured fruit with a layered complexity that is both powerful and long. It's loaded with black fruits, typical dark chocolate and mocha, and a slightly spicy nuance. There's real richness here and intensity, and it's all presented so marvellously. A most expressive example of the Barossa."

"This cracking Barossa Shiraz was named in honour of a family ancestor, Captain William Richard Randell. Always good to see wines which have enjoyed some time in the cellar before release, especially when it is from such an excellent vintage as 2019. Maturation was in American oak, 40% of which was new, for around a year and a half. The final wine is a barrel selection. Under cork. Dark maroon hue, there is some maturity as one would expect, along with a little oak still evident. There are notes of chocolate, licorice, plums, cassis, axle grease (in that most positive way), coffee grinds and blackberries. The structure gives us a wine which is seamless, finely balanced and very long. There is an enticing palate and intensity is maintained for the full journey. This will continue to drink beautifully for the next ten to fifteen years. Love it."

"This comes from the top performing fruit in small fermenters, all separate parcels matured in American oak for 18 months and then hand selected by chief winemaker Peter Kelly for blending prior to bottling. A cacophony of tempered dark chocolate, bramble and blackberry compote spiced with marsala chai. There are some stewed red raspberries and squashed figs too. The palate twists and turns with ironstone rubble, pulled tree bark and the kind of rustic steel you’d find in a farmers shed. It’s then stitched together by this purity of black plum skin fruit that wraps the entire package like a velvet red bow, tannins folded and placed neatly and evenly You can feel the barrel selection has been made to layer flavour and ensure structure will be enjoyed in early drinking and later much later into its life, another 5-8 years left here, acidity steers this nicely. A sumptuous wine. Drink now with slow cooked beef short ribs."
