Tasting Notes
Plantagenet Wines is a family-owned estate founded in 1968 in Mount Barker, in Western Australia’s Great Southern region. From its original Bouverie Vineyard—among the very first plantings in the area—it has grown into a respected producer, combining pioneering spirit with modern winemaking under the guidance of winemaker Mike Garland.
The 1997 Cabernet Blend is drawn from mature, red-brown earth vineyards on gentle slopes around Mount Barker. In that year, fruit was hand-harvested in late March, sorted and fermented in small tanks with gentle pump-overs to extract colour and fine tannins. After fermentation, the wine rested for 18 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads to preserve the fresh varietal fruit while adding subtle spice and structure.
In the glass, the 1997 Cabernet Blend shows a garnet core with brick-tinged edges. The nose is poised and savoury, offering aromas of blackcurrant leaf, dried herbs and graphite, with a hint of cedar. On the palate, it is medium-full and finely textured, revealing flavours of cassis, plum and a touch of dark chocolate, framed by soft, integrated tannins and bright acidity. The finish is long and earthy, with a lingering note of tobacco leaf. This refined, age-worthy wine pairs beautifully with roasted beef, venison stew or mature hard cheeses.
