Alkina Kin Shiraz 2023 is a masterful expression of terroir from a 100% dry-grown, organically farmed vineyard in Grenock, delivering a wine that balances power with elegance. The 2023 vintage showcases fruit from younger estate plantings, harvested between March 23 and 26, yielding a complex and structured Shiraz that captures the essence of its unique soils.
The blend is thoughtfully composed, with 56% sourced from Block 23, rooted in schist and clay soils that impart energy and structure. Complementing this are parcels from Polygon 10 on limestone (9%) and Polygon 14 on clay (14%), which contribute depth and a cool intensity. The final layers come from Block 38, situated on silt and sandstone, and an 8% addition of Mataro, each adding nuanced texture and complexity.
Each vineyard block underwent separate wild fermentation with varying levels of whole bunch inclusion, tailored to the soil geology. Block 23 and Polygon 10 were fermented with 80% and 100% whole bunches respectively, spending three weeks on skins before pressing into concrete tulip vessels. The fleshy fruit from Polygon 14 and Block 38 saw 50% and 30% whole bunch fermentation, followed by maturation in large format oak. Meanwhile, all Mataro was destemmed and matured in concrete, enhancing purity and vibrancy.
This meticulous approach results in a Shiraz that is layered with rich dark fruit, vibrant acidity, and finely grained tannins, offering both immediate appeal and excellent aging potential. The wine has earned a prestigious 93 points from James Halliday, reflecting its high quality and craftsmanship.
Adding to its allure, the label artwork was created by renowned artist and designer Damian Hamilton, making this bottle not only a celebration of fine wine but also a piece of contemporary art.
