Tasting Notes

Domaine de la Vougeraie's 2012 Corton Grand Cru “Le Clos du Roi” is a commanding expression of Pinot Noir from one of Burgundy's most historic and prestigious vineyards. Situated on the mid-slope of the Corton hill in the Cote de Beaune, this Grand Cru site is renowned for producing wines of both power and finesse.

The 2012 vintage was marked by low yields and concentrated fruit, resulting in wines with depth and structure. In the glass, this wine presents a deep ruby hue. The nose is complex and brooding, offering aromas of black cherry, blackberry, violet, and spice, underpinned by a strong mineral undertone reminiscent of stone.

On the palate, it is full-bodied and succulent, with fine mid-palate density. An abundance of dry extract helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine, leading to a mouth-coating finish.

This wine is entering its prime drinking window, offering immense pleasure now and the promise of further evolution through 2030. It pairs excellently with roasted meats, game, and aged cheeses.

Scores

96 / 100

""The 2012 Corton Le Clos du Roi is striking. Beautiful, lifted aromas meld into sweet red fruit in a deceptively medium-bodied Burgundy that is all about grace. Mint, wild flowers, sweet red cherries and pine inform the precise, crystalline finish. A weightless Burgundy endowed with elegance and superb purity, the 2012 should age gracefully for a number of years. Today, it is magnificent. The 80% whole clusters add dimensions of complexity and nuance that are a wonder to behold.""

""There are background touches of wood spice adding breadth to the floral, and exceptionally ripe mix of various red berries, earth and subtle sauvage hints that include a note of prune. The overtly powerful and big-bodied flavors possess fine mid-palate density as there is an abundance of dry extract that helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine on the succulent and mouth coating finish. This is very Corton in the sense that it's a big and powerful wine but at present it seems to lack a bit of vibrancy and the note of prune on the nose is never an encouraging sign. My score offers the benefit of the doubt that the freshness will pick up with a few years of bottle age in the same fashion as have a number of 2003s and 2009s""

""The 2012 Corton Le Clos du Roi Grand Cru comes from a single half-hectare parcel planted in the early 1950s and the 2012 contains 70% whole bunch fruit, raised in 50% new oak. It has a refined, intense bouquet with excellent delineation – building in the glass with luscious red berries and floral scents. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm, masculine, tobacco-tinged entry. There is good grip here, plenty of determination, although it is missing just a little finesse towards the finish. This will be interesting to watch develop.""
