Tasting Notes
Woodlands Wines is a family-owned estate in Wilyabrup, Margaret River, established in 1984 by David and Clare Watson. Celebrated for its meticulous viticulture and minimal-intervention cellar work, the winery focuses on small-batch wines that reveal the unique gravelly loam and maritime influence of its vineyards.
The “Clementine” Cabernet Blend 2019 is sourced from older-vine blocks on gravelly ridge tops and cooler valley floors. Hand-harvested fruit was destemmed, chilled overnight, then fermented in small open and closed vats with gentle pump-overs to extract fine tannins. After press, the wine matured for 16 months in French oak barriques (25 percent new), balancing oak spice with vibrant fruit purity.
In the glass, the 2019 Clementine shows a deep ruby hue. The nose offers lifted aromas of blackcurrant leaf, ripe plum and violet, with a hint of cedar. On the palate, it is medium-full and finely textured, delivering flavours of cassis, dark chocolate and subtle dried herb spice, framed by polished tannins and bright acidity. A long, savoury finish carries a note of crushed gravel and spice. This elegant blend pairs beautifully with roast lamb, grilled beef or aged cheddar.
