This is a completely different expression of Barossa Valley shiraz. Roasted nuts, curry leaves and twiggy herbs notes melt into a tide of raspberry, salted licorice, earth, woodsmoke, pepper and crushed violet characters, and maybe even brine. It’s sweet, red-fruited, dark-fruited, unusual, herbal, nutty, refreshing and floral all at once. I’m happy to put 94/100 on its but the journey it carries you on is worth more. Emphasis on the word refreshing here. Acidity has been beautifully handled. Actually, sitting with it some more, I’m easily 95/100. The tannin got me over the line; it’s exquisite.

This has been Hoffmann-Dallwitz vineyard fruit, and continues as such, with 1888 to 1912 Dallwitz Old as a part, and Hoffmann 1951 Dimchurch Home Old plot as another.

It’s hearty stuff, boot polish and black plum, garam masala and cedar with liquorice in the mix. Chunky but fresh, for this suite of wines, lots of depth and character, the finish briny and herbal with Dutch liquorice lingering. It’s fragrant, packs in stacks of character, feels a little warming and tannins somewhat sticky, but par for the course for this heartland stuff, and the intensity and drinkability is great.

Phwoar ... this is an Ebenezer-born shiraz that has considerable heft and power, while retaining a cadence and line that brings clarity and detail to its form. Yeah, sign me up for that. The soils are all red clay and ironstone over calcrete; that subregional sense of compression, bunchy nuance and the ferruginous baseline runs strong here. But there's something different. There's freshness and a little more light shining in than is the norm for its northern Barossa brethren. The dark plum and blackberry fruits are studded with exotic spice, peppercorn, pan juices, dark chocolate and earth; it's all there but there's lift and a pleasing pace. Yeah, this is a good'un alright.
