Tasting Notes

Rockford Wines, established by Robert O’Callaghan in 1971, is recognized as a guardian of Barossa tradition. Rather than expanding into modern, industrial-scale production, Rockford has maintained a small, hands-on operation in the heart of Barossa. The winery itself is built around historic stone sheds and original equipment, preserving not just the methods but also the visual heritage of the region.

A defining feature of Rockford’s approach is its close network of long-term growers - many of whom farm some of the oldest, dry-grown Shiraz vineyards in the Barossa Valley. These blocks, some planted over 100 years ago, contribute to the depth and complexity of the Basket Press Shiraz. The choice to work with these mature sites is both practical and philosophical: old vines naturally regulate yields, concentrating flavour and building structure in the resulting wines, while fostering a deep sense of regional continuity.

In the winery, traditional winemaking is not a slogan but a standard practice. Grapes are handpicked and fermented in small open vats, allowing for gentle handling and precise management of fermentation. The basket press itself - a slower, manual device - yields juice with finer tannin and less bitterness compared to modern pneumatic or continuous presses. This technique can be time-consuming and labour-intensive, but it is valued for producing wines of greater finesse and balance.

The 2011 vintage was especially challenging across South Australia, marked by a cool, wet season that tested growers’ patience and skill. Despite the difficulties, Rockford’s emphasis on meticulous vineyard work and careful selection ensured the quality of the fruit. As a result, the Basket Press Shiraz 2011 stands out for its restrained power and layered complexity: aromas of black plum, mulberry, and baking spice lead to a palate with savoury undertones, integrated oak, and a distinctive, textural finish.

Every bottle of Rockford Basket Press Shiraz is a reflection of Barossa’s viticultural legacy and the winery’s unyielding commitment to traditional methods. Rather than chasing immediate impact or trend-driven styles, Rockford pursues longevity, balance, and authenticity - producing wines that speak quietly yet compellingly of their origin, process, and purpose. For collectors and enthusiasts, Basket Press represents not just a wine but a living link to the Barossa’s past and a testament to the value of patient, principled winemaking.

Scores

95 / 100

"Difficult season, but it's not a difficult wine. Fans of the label with some already stashed in their cellar can breathe easy. It's fuller in body than the season might have predicted, but more elegant than is usual for this wine. Blackberry, raspberry, coffee grounds, toast and vanilla fill it out, with herbs and peppers whispering through the finish. Tannin is the key: it's ripe, fine, marked by its finesse and yet determined to get its point across. Perhaps not a long-termer, but no doubting either its merit or drinking appeal. - Campbell Mattinson, Published 12 July 2021"

"A very charming trace of oxidative patina (which tends to fade rather than strengthen with standing time in the glass), Marsala, fig compote, but also fresh motifs: blueberry, liquorice. Oily and mild on the palate, quite rounded with very fine, flatteringly matured tannin, viscous-ethereal transition to the finish where the tannin finally gains some astringency quite abruptly. Very exciting wine, stylistically completely out of time."
