Tasting Notes
Akkeshi Shoman Blended Whisky
Where Grain Lends Grace and Smoke Carries Seed
This release, part of the "24 Sekki" series, leans into seasonality not as a theme but as a guiding principle. Shoman arrives in late May, a liminal moment where the air is warm but not yet heavy, and that spirit pervades the glass - it is whisky caught mid-bloom.
The nose is immediately expressive but balanced - a dance between soft peat smoke, vanilla pod, and steamed rice. There's a curious note of herbal sweetness, like shiso leaf, and something faintly floral - linden blossom, perhaps. From the grain spirit comes a delicate brightness: lemon curd, white peach, and a touch of confectioner's sugar. This isn't shallow sweetness - it's lift, light as silk.
The palate is a study in structure and restraint. The malt contributes depth - lightly roasted nuts, salted caramel, and a whisper of sea spray - while the grain threads its way through with green apple, white tea, and a touch of fresh ginger. There's a gentle peatiness throughout, more hearth smoke than bonfire, lending a kind of warmth that feels internal, not external.
It glides into a finish that's soft but persistent - faint pepper, toasted barley, and an afterglow of lemon oil and dried kelp. It doesn't demand applause. It simply sits with you, like good company on a long, quiet evening.
The Elegance of Intention
What makes Shoman notable is not any single flourish, but the clarity of its vision. This is a blended whisky that shows no signs of compromise. Each component - malt, grain, cask, peat - is there not to pad or stretch, but to contribute. It reflects Akkeshi's dedication to crafting whisky as one would compose poetry: with precision, rhythm, and respect for space.
If Keichitsu was whisky as awakening, Shoman is whisky as growth - still tender, but taking root.
Final Thought
Akkeshi Shoman is a whisky for the attentive. For those who understand that not all blends are built to vanish into mixers - some are crafted to express harmony, like a garden coming into leaf.
It's not just a blend.
It's the spirit of early summer, made liquid.
