Tasting Notes

MHOBA Bushfire  -  Sickle Bush Stave Aged South African Rum

Here comes the wild child of the Lowveld - Bushfire by MHOBA, a rum that doesn't just tell a story, it sings it in smoke and sap. This isn't just a spirit aged in oak. This is rum infused with the soul of the South African bushveld, matured on staves of Sickle Bush - a native hardwood that burns hot, smells like wild campfires, and carries the soul of the land in its grain.

MHOBA, for those not yet acquainted, is a distillery that doesn't follow the rules - it writes new ones in cane juice and iron. Based in Malalane, in the heart of Mpumalanga, they make rum from fresh-pressed Nkomazi sugarcane, all estate-grown and wild fermented. Pot-distilled in handmade stills, MHOBA's rums are unapologetically raw, full of funk, and steeped in South African terroir.

Bushfire takes that philosophy further - ditching the standard oak in favour of staves cut from Sickle Bush, a tough, thorny native wood often used in traditional fires. It's toasted and dropped into glass demijohns filled with high-proof cane spirit, and over time, it transforms the liquid into something that tastes as wild as it sounds.

On the nose, this is like standing downwind of a sunset bonfire: smoky, earthy, with notes of leather, toasted spice, and green sugarcane husk. But then come the surprises - hints of dried peach, honeycomb, and eucalyptus. There's a savoury, almost meaty aroma here, but tempered by citrus zest and the unmistakable freshness of agricole-style rum.

The palate is bold and rustic. Dry, with a slap of burnt sugar, warm pepper, pine sap, and woodsmoke. It's oily, intense, and layered - not a crowd-pleaser, but a truth-teller. As it opens up, you'll get flavours of charred orange peel, resin, black tea, and a metallic minerality that almost evokes natural wine. The Sickle Bush wood gives it a kind of African Islay character - like someone told a peated whisky to grow up in sugarcane country.

The finish? Long, smoky, and herbal, with a lick of tannin and a whisper of dried herbs and green tobacco. You'll feel this one echo in your chest.

How to drink it? Neat, ideally. Or with a splash of water to let it stretch and breathe. It's an excellent fireside rum - contemplative, wild, and grounded. If you must mix it, go spirit-forward: a Bushfire Old Fashioned with smoked bitters, or a Negroni twist with amaro and dry vermouth. But honestly, this one's best as a conversation piece - a bottle to pour for those who think they've tasted it all.

Bushfire is for explorers. For lovers of mezcal, Clairin, or peated whisky who want to see what South Africa can do with flame and cane. It's not just rum aged with native wood - it's rum aged with identity.

This is MHOBA at its most elemental - rum that tastes like red earth, open flame, and homegrown rebellion. Bushfire doesn't just warm you. It brands you. One sip, and you'll know: this is Africa, in spirit form.
