Tasting Notes

Domaine François Lamarche are sole owners of La Grande Rue, one of the four grand cru monopoles of Vosne-Romanée (La Tâche, La Romanée and La Romanée Conti are the others)

Burgundy Domaines such as this are a rare find – even more exceptional because the vineyard holdings here are almost entirely made up of Grand Cru and Premier Cru parcels in Vosne/Echézeaux

This domaine has its roots at the start of the 20th century when Henri Lamarche, a cooper, married Marie Grivelet from Chambolle-Musigny. Henri started making his own wines and selling them directly from the estate. It was his son who gained the La Grande Rue vineyard from his wife's family by way of a dowry. This was in the 1930s when there wasn't great demand for burgundy and grands crus attracted more tax, so M Lamarche decided to leave the vineyard as a premier cru (this is despite its location between La Tâche and Romanée-Conti). In 1989 La Grande Rue was elevated to grand cru status by the INAO. Lamarche bottles 14 different wines from a little more than 10 hectares of vineyards.

Scores

95 / 100

""The 2016 La Grande Rue Grand Cru has a very pure, almost pastille-like bouquet with copious red cherry fruit mixed with crushed strawberry and a little cassis. La Grande Rue? [Post script: Bingo!] The palate is very pretty with fine-grain tannin. This is surfeit with freshness and vitality, although it does not quite have the depth and structure of other Grand Crus from the appellation. It does fan out towards the finish. The persistence, and the saline aftertaste are very appealing. Excellent. (NM)""

94 / 100

""A subtle touch of wood serves as a suitably discreet backdrop for the exceptionally floral-infused nose that offers up additional notes of spice, red currant and pekoe tea. The rounder and slightly less intense flavors are still blessed with excellent punch and power while exhibiting more salinity on the built-to-age finish. This is more refined than the Grands Ech but not quite as complex, at least not today.""

17 / 20

""An unusal aroma that combines red fruit, vanilla spice and crushed herbs. Light, very fine tannins, a slim but not austere style which hides unexpected persistence. A clear family likeness with the Hautes-Côtes but with much more intensity at the core. Has an almost alpine character in its fresh minerality combined with the red fruits. Lots of refined pleasure but not a blockbuster. 17/20 points (JH)""
