Tasting Notes

Domaine Arlaud, a family-run estate based in Morey-Saint-Denis, has built a reputation for precision and purity, combining organic and biodynamic viticulture with a sensitive, hands-off approach in the cellar. Their holdings in Charmes-Chambertin-one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most expressive Grand Cru vineyards - are a showcase for the elegance and depth of old-vine Pinot Noir grown on classic limestone and clay soils.

The 2015 vintage was warm and generous, producing wines with concentration, supple tannins, and immediate appeal, yet with the structure for aging. In this wine, grapes are hand-harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts (with a portion of whole clusters), and aged in French oak barrels, a modest proportion of which are new, allowing the vineyard’s personality to shine through.

In the glass, the Charmes-Chambertin 2015 reveals a luminous ruby hue. The nose is intricate and inviting, offering aromas of ripe raspberry, wild strawberry, rose petals, and sweet spices, with undertones of forest floor and a touch of smoky mineral. On the palate, it is refined and layered-silky in texture, yet supported by firm tannins and vibrant acidity. Notes of red cherry, orange peel, clove, and crushed stone unfold through a long, resonant finish.

A poised and graceful Grand Cru, this wine is ideal for pairing with duck breast, roast guinea fowl, or earthy dishes like mushroom risotto. While accessible now, it will continue to evolve beautifully over the next 10 to 15 years.

Scores

""Tangy and chewy in texture, this black cherry, licorice and mineral-flavored red is dense and muscular. Holds plenty in reserve and builds to a long finish. Beefy tannins are well-integrated, and the fruit goes on and on. Best from 2023 through 2047"Sweet Spot. This is also markedly ripe yet the liqueur-like aromas of plum, earth and the sauvage remain quite fresh. As is usually the case this is bigger, richer and more powerful than the Vigne au Saint to the overtly muscular broad-shouldered flavors that conclude in a firm and velvety finish that is very Corton in style. Patience required.""

""Reduction. The supple, round and strikingly refined, indeed even silky flavors possess focused power and punch while offering outstanding length on the dusty, palate coating and mildly austere finale. This is an exercise in harmony and refinement.""

""The 2015 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a refined bouquet with ample dark cherry, black plum and hints of violet coming through with time, though I found myself preferring more the delineation on the Gevrey Aux Combottes. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet tannin; conservative in some ways with sharp acidity and rigid tannin. Perhaps it needs more complexity and tension to develop on the finish by the time of bottling to rank with the best Charmes-Chambertin.""
