Tasting Notes
McWilliam’s Wines, one of Australia’s most historic and decorated family-owned producers, has long been celebrated for its commitment to quality and innovation. The Barwang label, established in the 1980s, was instrumental in pioneering cool-climate viticulture in New South Wales’ Hilltops region, bringing a new dimension of elegance and structure to Australian Cabernet Sauvignon. The Limited Release series represents the pinnacle of McWilliam’s craftsmanship, showcasing the finest parcels from each vintage.
The 1989 vintage was marked by a warm and dry growing season, allowing for optimal ripening and the development of complex aromatics. Grapes were hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks, followed by maturation in a combination of French and American oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop complexity while preserving its vibrant fruit character.
In the glass, the 1989 Barwang Limited Release Cabernet Sauvignon presents a deep garnet hue with brick-red edges, indicative of its maturity. The nose offers lifted aromas of dark berries, leather, and spice, complemented by subtle earthy undertones. On the palate, it is full-bodied and richly textured, showcasing concentrated flavours of ripe plum, blackcurrant, and a hint of mocha. The wine's fine-grained tannins and balanced acidity contribute to a harmonious structure, leading to a long, persistent finish. This Cabernet Sauvignon exemplifies the depth and elegance characteristic of the Barwang vineyard and is poised for graceful ageing over the next decade.
