Tasting Notes

Mount Langi Ghiran, nestled at the southern edge of the Grampians in Victoria, is recognised as one of Australia’s iconic cool-climate Shiraz producers. The estate’s unique location - surrounded by towering granite cliffs and ancient soils - provides a distinct microclimate that allows for a long, slow ripening season and exceptional flavour development. Established in the 1960s and refined over decades, Mount Langi Ghiran’s approach centres on meticulous vineyard management, with a focus on low yields, sustainable farming, and hand harvesting to protect fruit quality.

The Langi Shiraz is drawn from the estate’s original vines, many planted in the 1960s and 1970s, grown on granite-rich soils that bring natural elegance and peppery complexity to the wine. The 2014 vintage benefited from a cool season with gradual ripening, leading to a harvest of grapes showing both purity and depth. Fermentation in small open-top fermenters, gentle plunging, and extended maturation in French oak (predominantly seasoned) shaped a wine of aromatic lift and structural finesse. On the nose, the wine offers layers of blackberry, black cherry and violet, accented by classic cool-climate pepper and spice. The palate is refined and vibrant, with fine tannins, refreshing acidity and a savoury, lingering finish. This release stands as a hallmark of cool-climate Australian Shiraz - poised, detailed and true to its unique Grampians origins, embodying the meticulous care and vision behind Mount Langi Ghiran’s reputation.

Scores

98 / 100

"50% hand-picked, 50% machine-harvested (traditional), part whole berry, part crushed, 2 weeks on skins with cultured yeast, 14 months in French barriques (30% new). The Grampians at its most seductive. Medium-bodied, with supple dark fruits, licorice, spice and soft tannins."
- James Halliday

95 / 100

"(aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, 30 percent of them new) Youthful purple. Mineral- and smoke-accented cherry, blueberry and pipe tobacco aromas show excellent focus, picking up suggestions of allspice, vanilla and licorice with air. Pliant, deeply concentrated black and blue fruit flavors show outstanding clarity, supple texture and a touch of bitter chocolate that emerges as the wine opens up. Finishes seamless, spicy and extremely long, featuring velvety tannins and lingering suggestions of juicy blue fruit and dusty minerals."
