The Solaia is only produced in exceptional vintages.
The Solaia is a full ruby red wine with beautiful aromas of black pepper, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, plums and pickled fruit, its extremely expressive with beautifully velvety and soft tannins and full aftertaste.

"Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese (with a small touch of Cabernet Franc), Solaia's winning card is texture. The wine is soft, velvety and penetrating in the mouth with succulent flavors of blackberry, creamy cassis berry, chocolate and tobacco. "Pretty cold, wet start so there was a late flowering. Very hot July, cooler August with regular rains. September and October enjoyed an Indian summer for the quite-late harvest. Sangiovese was picked from the beginning of October, the Cabernets in mid October. Short harvest, just two weeks whereas it’s generally up to 24 days. This was the last year they did malo in new oak. Since then, malo is done in old oak which makes the wine more approachable, the fruit purer and less tannic. This was also the last vintage with the blend done just after malo. Now they wait a bit longer. Rich and concentrated with a hint of sweet oak on the nose. Sweet palate and a bit of heat on the end. Just a little scrawny on the finish. Quite grippy still but it became gentler in the glass."

Tasting Notes

The Antinori family first produced this iconic wine in 1978, and the initial blend was Cabernet Sauvignon (80%) and Cabernet Franc (20%) and repeated again in 1979. In subsequent years 20% of Sangiovese was introduced into the blend and adjustments were made in the rapport between Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc until the current blend was settled upon. Only produced in exceptional vintages Solaia is a very intense ruby red in colour with concentrated aromas of red and black fruits (cherries and black cherries, raspberries, cassis, blueberries, and wild berry fruit) alongside notes of vanilla, black pepper, and liquorice. The palate is exceptionally elegant and balanced, fresh in its flavour and and silky in texture and tannin. The finish, characterised by notes of fruit and spices, is of great finesse and length.
