Tasting Notes

The story of the Barton family is one of enduring legacy and generational dedication, with each new chapter building upon the achievements of the last. Today, Lilian Barton-Sartorius leads the family’s trio of Médoc estates: Château Léoville Barton, a 2nd Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Julien; Château Langoa Barton, a 3rd Grand Cru Classé also in Saint-Julien; and Château Mauvesin Barton in Moulis-en-Médoc. She is the daughter of the late Anthony Barton, a legendary figure in Bordeaux, and continues his legacy with the support of her children, Mélanie and Damien, who represent the 10th generation of the Barton lineage.

At the heart of the family’s reputation lies Château Léoville Barton, a benchmark of Saint-Julien known for its finesse, longevity, and classical style. The 50-hectare vineyard sits on one of the most prized gravelly ridges of the Garonne, overlooking the Gironde estuary. This unique site, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, expresses the very essence of its terroir while carrying the unmistakable mark of the Barton family. The estate's wines have earned renown for their elegance, consistency, and timeless quality—hallmarks of a dynasty that has shaped Bordeaux for nearly three centuries.

Scores

97 / 100

"Graphite and cedar nuances are highlighted in the bouquet of Léoville Barton, as with Langoa. These are followed by a magnificent definition of Cabernet Sauvignon with fruity nuances such as blackcurrant and elderberry complemented by a touch of peppermint, while subtle nuances of fresh wood consolidate the beauty of the bouquet. Remarkably dense, the wine shines with its precision and serenity. It embodies the notion of quiet strength as it moves forward calmly and places itself before the 2024 vintage. This is also the nature of a great wine… 2029-2049 - Yves Beck"

"In the 2024 vintage, Château Léoville Barton rises above the Médoc with its rich bouquet and refined depth of texture. A delicate yet dynamic floral breeze of wisteria and iris unfurls with elegance, winning the heart at first breath, evoking moments of tenderness from this rainy vintage. Its structure is composed and refined, like an elder gentleman of impeccable manners, with tannins and lingering “sweetness” in perfect harmony. A noble elegance flows through each echo of the finish, With 92% Cabernet Sauvignon at its core, this is not merely another testament to Léoville Barton’s identity. It is one of the most emotionally resonant moments of the 2024 vintage, destined to prove its legend again and again over the next 15, 20, even 30 years. - Alexandre Ma"
