Tasting Notes
The 2024 vintage began with an unusually mild and dry winter, leading to early budbreak around 26 March. Spring brought challenges with wet, cool conditions that encouraged downy mildew and disrupted flowering, particularly affecting Merlot and early Cabernet. However, summer conditions significantly improved, with hot, dry weather and a water deficit on deep gravel soils aiding ripening. High daytime temperatures and cool nights promoted phenolic maturity and the synthesis of anthocyanins. Harvest began on 23 September and concluded in early October under stable weather. Despite a difficult start and end to the season, precise vineyard management ensured refined, aromatic wines with structure and freshness, expressing the Atlantic character of their terroir. The vineyard spans 82 hectares of deep gravel soils, with vines averaging 50 years old, and the wines are matured for 18 months in 100% new oak barrels.
The wine displays a garnet-red hue and opens with a refined, complex nose of wild bilberry and red berry aromas, complemented by brioche notes and a delicate floral lift. On the palate, it is full-bodied and smooth, with a silky, harmonious texture that conveys both opulence and minerality. Hints of smoky notes and toasted almond add depth, while precise, chilled tannins provide balance and structure. Bright red berry flavours extend into a long, elegant finish, leaving a lasting impression of freshness and finesse.

99 / 100"Mouton 2024 presents itself with subtlety and serenity. It is impressive in its ability to assimilate the specificities of the vintage, all the while championing its identity, its personality. Thus, the bouquet reveals nuances of black berries and soft spices complemented by scents of licorice, anise and a hint of vanilla. On the palate, the wine creates the link between charm, seduction, temperament and nobility. It displays a sharp structure as I have rarely observed at Mouton. Worthy of Obi-Wan’s lightsaber, the acidity has the merit to endorse the finesse present in an energetic logic enhancing the brilliance of the wine and opening the way to depth. A tasting not being a contest dedicated to timing, it is essential to follow the evolution of the wine in the glass. In this case, between 4:55 pm and 5:25 pm! Regularly putting freshness back into the glass, by that meaning wine, allows to concretise and assimilate the progression of the wine. The nature of Mouton, its DNA becomes more and more insistent, obvious, comforting. The nuances of graphite, the notes of cedar, a subtle woodiness and the scents already cited before confirm it with relevance. The tannins manage to encircle the incisive side to create a symbiosis opening the way to a wine that will please some generations(more...)"

"This shows plenty of drive with dusty and creamy tannins that run the length of the wine and builds at the end. It’s medium-bodied showing a focus and energy. Dark currants and flowers flavor. This really has length and it has the depth to improve with age. 93% cabernet sauvignon and 7% merlot."
