Tasting Notes

Founded in the early 18th century, Château Pontet-Canet has been under the care of the Tesseron family since 1975. In 1994, Alfred Tesseron revolutionised the estate with his visionary dedication to environmentally conscious viticulture and meticulous winemaking. Since 2015, his daughter Justine has continued to lead with the same pioneering spirit. As one of Bordeaux’s first Grand Cru Classé estates to embrace biodynamic farming, Pontet-Canet benefits from an outstanding terroir and employs concrete amphorae during part of the vinification process, enhancing the wine’s pure, expressive aromatic character.

Following an exceptionally wet and mild winter, the growing season began earlier than usual. Heavy rains in early April brought the first outbreaks of mildew, while cooler-than-average temperatures slowed vine development. Flowering, however, took place under favourable conditions. Thanks to careful vineyard management, controlled vine vigour, and the strategic use of cover crops, grape losses due to mildew were kept to a minimum.

The summer was characterised by a beneficial drought, always a promising sign for wine quality. As the soils dried, the vines experienced gradual water stress, eliminating herbaceous notes and promoting the development of vibrant fruit aromas. By late August, more unsettled weather returned, continuing throughout the harvest. Guided by patience and close observation, we waited for each plot to reach optimal ripeness, ensuring the best possible expression for this vintage, a promising and beautiful outcome.

"The scent of ripe berries, brushed with a touch of clotted cream, began to bloom slowly, and in that moment, I couldn’t help but give it a quiet nod of admiration. The redcurrant and blueberry notes may not be abundant, but they are vivid and dimensional; the tannins may not be as bold, but they are definitely refined. This softer, more approachable expression may not align with the style we’re used to, but it feels like an old friend, gently recounting its journey through the 2024 vintage. It turns out that when it quiets down, Château Pontet-Canet reveals a different kind of beauty."

"The twin themes of Cabernet and Merlot combine beautifully here in a harmonious, silky wine that already shows uncommon balance and precocity. While the humans might have been stressed, 2024 Pontet-Canet is nothing of the sort. If prices relax, as was hinted, I can see this being a no-brainer to purchase because it will drink early and hold well, thanks to its innate balance. As always, the flavour and stance that Pontet-Canet delivers are all its own, and fans will be delighted here. Medium-weight, sensual, and haunting, this is a classic case of years of experience paying off, coupled with deep-seated trust in one’s terroir and those hard-working people looking after it."
