TASTING NOTES

Frankland Estate Smith Cullam Syrah 2019 offers an intense and full-bodied experience, masterfully balanced with elegance and depth. Sourced from the original east-west facing “Winery Block” planted on Isolation Ridge in 1988, this wine reflects decades of terroir expression and winemaking expertise.

Renowned critic Huon Hooke praises its tremendous length and balance, highlighting the wine’s brooding complexity. Expect a captivating bouquet of floral aromas intertwined with distinctive ferrous minerality, lending the wine a serious and intent character.

The palate reveals tight acidity and refined tannins that weave together seamlessly, delivering a graphite and ferrous thread throughout each sip. This structure not only enhances the wine’s longevity but also its versatility at the table.

Perfect pairing suggestions include succulent beef and venison, where the wine’s bold profile complements rich, savory flavors.

Crafted in one of Australia’s most respected cool-climate regions, the 2019 vintage benefits from ideal growing conditions that promote concentrated fruit and vibrant acidity, making this Syrah a standout example of premium craftsmanship.

Deep, bright purple/red colour, the bouquet shows violets, cranberry and blueberry, with meaty spicy overtones, and a note of bunchy 'forest floor' adding extra interest. The wine is very intense, full-bodied but elegantly styled, with tremendous length and balance. Wow, this is impressive cool-climate shiraz: spicy but ripe and powerful in its relatively understated way.

More specific sourcing within the Isolation Ridge vineyard, a section no doubt that brings that little extra va-voom to the way shiraz works here. Enticing floral fragrance as well as a stony, gravelly sense, deliciously attractive and toned on the palate. There's a purity to this wine that enhances all that's on offer. - Tony Love

Soft, gentle, detailed red of spice, savouriness and very pure feeling and unadorned fruit character. Has some pretty sweetness balanced nicely by fresh acidity, a good deal of fruit concentration, and a general sense of elegance comes to mind. Bright finish, a little crunchy, says hold off drinking for a year or so. Excellent wine.
