TASTING NOTES

Gianni Brunelli Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is a rare gem from one of Montalcino’s most soulful and respected estates, crafted with precision and passion. Limited to just 130 bottles, this exclusive vintage reflects the expert hand of Laura Brunelli, who masterfully blends fruit from two unique vineyard sites: the cooler, clay-based Le Chiuse di Sotto and the sunnier, schist-rich Podernovone. This combination creates a wine of remarkable complexity, balancing freshness, layered structure, and refined power.

Produced under the guidance of renowned winemaker Paolo Vagaggini, this Brunello exemplifies aromatic finesse and minerality paired with an age-worthy structure. The 2020 vintage is celebrated for its elegant floral notes and silky tannins, earning top-tier critic scores including James Suckling 95 and Vinous 94. These accolades highlight its exceptional quality and the wine’s ability to evolve beautifully over time.

Certified organic, Gianni Brunelli’s Brunello di Montalcino 2020 embodies sustainable viticulture practices that respect the land and terroir. The Montalcino region, known worldwide for producing some of Italy’s finest Sangiovese-based wines, benefits from its diverse microclimates, which are expertly showcased in this vintage. The contrasting soils of clay and schist contribute to the wine’s distinctive minerality and complex character.

This Brunello is not only a collectible treasure but also a sophisticated expression of Montalcino’s rich winemaking heritage. It offers an exquisite balance of elegance and power, making it perfect for those who appreciate refined wines with depth and personality. Whether cellared or enjoyed now, it promises an unforgettable tasting experience marked by floral aromatics, vibrant acidity, and a long, silky finish.

Balsamic and complex profile of this wine. The nose exudes dried flowers, liquorice, raspberries and redcurrants. Very crisp and juicy, with full body and bony, chalky tannins due to its youth. Nevertheless, it is sweet and balanced on the finish. It still needs some time to integrate better, but it's a gourmet wine with very good substance for the long haul.

The Brunello di Montalcino 2020 seduces with a seductive bouquet of crushed cherries and strawberries, emphasised by notes of mint, cedar wood and saddle leather. It is a graceful and elegant style with a medium body and pure notes of wild berries supported by a lively acidity. The 2020 lingers with nuances of liquorice and blue and purple flowers, leaving a subtle coating of fine tannins that frame the experience beautifully.

The Gianni Brunelli Le Chiuse di Sotto 2020 Brunello di Montalcino is balanced, finely structured and has a soft consistency on the palate. There is a lot of life in this lively Brunello. Red and violet fruits merge with sweet earth and iris roots. I particularly like the mouthfeel that is achieved here. It is this combination of richness and extreme suppleness that characterises it.

Due to the high temperatures and dry conditions, the quantities were even lower than the winery's already modest average yields," says Laura Brunelli. For this reason, she decided to forgo a Riserva in 2020 and use the best of the production for this bottling. This bottling is an example of the beautiful floral character of the vintage, with scents of lavender and plum blossom wafting from the glass. Exotic spices, cinchona bark and bitter orange add complexity to the palate, which shows the warmth of summer with seductive ripeness and indulgent structure. It finishes with a gentle pull of talc-like tannins and a welcome tension.
