TASTING NOTES

Giant Steps Applejack Vineyard Chardonnay 2024 is a masterful expression of the upper Yarra Valley's unique terroir. Sourced from the Applejack Vineyard, perched at 320 metres elevation on a dramatic north-east-facing slope, this Chardonnay benefits from a cooler, extended growing season that enhances its vibrant acidity and complex flavor profile.

Handpicked and whole bunch pressed, the juice undergoes wild fermentation in 500L French oak puncheons without settling, embracing full gross lees for added texture. The wine matures for 10 months in a blend of 15% new and 85% seasoned French oak barrels from Mercurey, Taransaud, and Dargaud & Jaeglé cooperages, with no bâtonnage, preserving its natural elegance and purity.

This 2024 vintage displays a pale straw color with green tints, unveiling an elegant and complex nose featuring aromas of white peach, nectarine, honeysuckle, and subtle spice. On the palate, it is rich and flavorful, balanced by refreshing acidity and culminating in a long, saline finish that leaves a lasting impression.

From the James Halliday Winery of the Year, this wine has earned 96 points from James Halliday, who describes it as “saline and long,” underscoring its refined minerality and remarkable length.

Perfectly capturing the essence of its cool-climate origin, the Giant Steps Applejack Vineyard Chardonnay 2024 is a sophisticated choice for those seeking a premium, terroir-driven Chardonnay with depth, finesse, and a distinctive regional character.

Scores

96/100

Applejack vineyard was planted at Gladysdale by Ray Guerin in '97, and only 2ha of its 11ha
are planted to chardonnay. Fermented and matured in both puncheons and ceramic eggs
(30%). This is all about purity and precision with its aromas of white stone fruits, crushed
rocks and a little white nougat. The palate is, as you'd expect, tightly coiled, waiting to unwind. Saline and long. Along with the Bastard Hill, this will need some time to become more open and expressive.
