TASTING NOTES

Tyrrell’s Wines Vat 9 Winemaker's Selection Shiraz 2022 is a distinguished expression of Hunter Valley’s iconic Shiraz style, celebrated for its depth and elegance. Crafted from the finest parcels of the Tyrrell Estate ‘Ashmans’, this wine showcases vines aged over 50 years, rooted in rich red clay soils atop limestone, which impart a unique minerality and complexity.

The 2022 vintage benefits from an exceptional growing season following a rare drought-breaking rainfall in 2020. This led to a balanced and stress-free ripening period, with an extended hang time that enhanced flavor development and preserved vibrant natural acidity. Handpicked and meticulously sorted in February, the grapes were fermented separately in open top vats before maturing predominantly in newer French oak casks, culminating in a harmonious blend assembled in late 2021 and further aged for five months.

Vat 9 Shiraz reveals a vibrant purple hue and a regal bouquet featuring lifted spice, rich dark fruits, and subtle oak nuances. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with remarkable intensity and a velvety texture, embodying the hallmark balance of fruit, acidity, oak, and refined tannins. This wine exemplifies the classic Hunter Valley Shiraz profile with effortless structure and no harsh edges, promising excellent aging potential.

  • Classic Hunter Valley Shiraz: One of Australia’s most recognised and cherished wine styles.
  • Old Vine Excellence: Sourced from 50+ year-old vines in the Ashmans subregion, including the historic Mathews and Contours vineyards planted in 1968.
  • Vintage Highlights: 2022’s cool summer and extended ripening period ensured vibrant flavors and balanced acidity.
  • Winemaking: Handpicked fruit fermented in open top vats and matured in mostly new French oak for added complexity.
  • Cellaring Potential: A classic Vat 9 release designed to develop gracefully over time.

Experience the refined elegance and rich heritage of Tyrrell’s Vat 9 Shiraz 2022—a benchmark wine that captures the essence of Hunter Valley’s terroir and the artistry of winemaking.

This wine upholds its regal status as one of the finest reds from the region. Multilayered and serious, you'll find concentrated flavours laced within a velvety frame. The palate is commanding with its assertive intensity and its plush, expansive nature. You'll see blood plums, crushed sage, mulberries and wet soil. There's also some cracked cacao nib, pure blueberry and earthy rhubarb compote. The grapes are sourced from the best parcels from Tyrrell's Ashmans property. Pure class.

Brilliant deep purple-red colour; red berry, bacon-fat, raspberry and pepper aromas, bright and fresh on palate, intense and above all supremely elegant, medium bodied and focused, long and intense but also subtle and refined. A great example of the medium bodied elegance of classic Hunter shiraz.

The flagship. Perhaps overlooked, due to the commercial obsession with the single vineyard wines, a recent phenomenon. To do so is the drinker's loss, for this is exceptional. Alpine spruce, licorice root, blue and red-fruit allusions, with flecks of mint providing lift and verve. The coddled warmth of polished leather. Lovely stuff, defined by the long-stretch tannins, a manifest from a meld of older vine sites. Typically Hunter mid-weighted and savory. Drink or hold, but best after 2030. Screw cap.

Pretty, perfumed, dark red fruit, a little spice, a light dusting of vanilla cocoa. Medium-bodied, composed and flavoursome, cool clear acidity, tannin is there adding gentle grip, kind of a powdery/chalky texture here, and the finish is long with fragrance, fine grip and a sort of cranberry acidity. It’s quite a delicate wine, and I reckon it will be terrific with some bottle age. Superb.
