"A selection across two vineyards on either side of Mengler Hill, pruned to abstemious yields, hand-picked and plunged resplendent with 15% whole-bunch, before maturation in French oak (25% new) for 12 months. The result is a more intense expression than its brethren, boasting a vinous drive of mocha, coffee bean and bitter chocolate melded with the assorted dark berry fruits, across the palate. Long and sumptuous. Compelling length. I prefer the juiciness of the regular Barossa wine, but this wins based on its intrinsic qualitative makeup: tenacity and intensity of flavour."

Tasting Notes

This is a blend of a single Barossa Valley vineyard and a single Eden Valley vineyard on either side of Mengler Hill. The Eden Valley portion is a low-yielding and dry grown vineyard located near Cranford not far from the Eden Valley township in southern Eden Valley. The wine was not fined, given the loosest possible filtration and minimal sulphur before bottling. Mengler’s Shiraz is a rich but balanced style that shows off the best of the Barossa and Eden Valley, you could sum it up by saying power and poise. More in the medium bodied mould, the palate is supple and elegantly fruited, with dark berry, and seductive Eden Valley spice complemented by silky tannins, subtle oak before a long and bright finish. Drinking well now this has an assured and long life ahead of it so will cellar comfortably for the next five years. Drink with a chargrilled steak or a selection of hard cheeses with lavash.
