TASTING NOTES

Cirillo 1850 Ancestor Vine Grenache 2019 is a remarkable expression of heritage and terroir from the Barossa Valley’s Light Pass area, home to the world’s oldest Grenache vineyard planted in 1850. Grown on sandy soils in the historic Seigersdorf subregion, this single-vineyard wine reflects over 170 years of meticulous cultivation by the Cirillo family, whose dedication brings unmatched depth and character to every bottle.

This Grenache emphasizes the purity of the variety rather than oak influence, presenting a beautifully seamless profile that echoes the elegance of classic Rhone styles. On the palate, it delivers vibrant red fruit notes balanced by lively acidity and savoury spice, while the fine, long tannins provide structure and a refined finish. Its complexity and balance make it one of the rare Australian Grenaches capable of rewarding over a decade of cellaring, evolving gracefully with time.

Key highlights include:

  • Crafted from the world’s oldest Grenache vines, planted in 1850, showcasing Barossa Valley’s deep viticultural heritage.
  • Seamless harmony of red fruit vibrancy, savoury spice, and elegant tannins with a long, precise finish.
  • Highly acclaimed by critics, this Grenache is prized by collectors for its ageing potential and exceptional depth.

(2018 Vintage) This, I'll say up front, is a sensational wine, from the gnarled old Cirillo 1850 vines on the sands of Vine Vale. Deep and bright in the glass. There is more detail and aromatic amplitude here. Perfectly poised plum and berry fruits, ginger spice, turned earth, wild strawberries, cola and purple floral tones. There's depth and horsepower obviously present here but there is a freshness and sense of clarity to the proceedings that just draws you in. Superb length of flavour, too, finishing sapid and filigreed with uber-fine, compact, sandy tannins. A ripping release.

(2018 Vintage) Medium-deep crimson. Fresh red plum, strawberry with Chinotto, touch of Negroni notes. Attractive sweet red plum strawberry Negroni flavours, Lovely mid-palate volume, fine slinky textures and fresh long acidity. Delicious wine. Lovely richness and extract. A reference style for the Barossa. 1848 Grenache vines.
