Generally more backward than most of the Premiers Crus in the Dujac line up, this is also more marked by the domaine’s use of whole bunch fermentation. It’s savoury, sappy and iodine-scented with impressive concentration, stylish use of oak and the sap and density to age. 2024-34. (01/2018)

From Les Beauxmonts Bas on the Flagey side. Bright dark centre with lighter rim. Slightly reserved at first but can sense lots wanting to emerge. Quite intense mixed red fruits. Darker juicy fruit on the palate then stem freshness. Juicy rich red fruit returns at the back.

From vines in the lower portion of Beaux Monts, adjacent to Dujac’s, Rouget’s 2016 is superb, opening in the glass with aromas of grilled meat, roast espresso, sapid black fruits, liquorice and smoked meat. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and concentrated, with a fine-grained chassis of tannins, excellent depth and dimension, and terrific intensity. Its juicy acids provide lovely balance. The 2016 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts has a perfumed bouquet with cold limestone scents that infuse the Morello cherry and crushed strawberry, tightly wound and nicely focused, understated compared to others that I have encountered from this vineyard. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, fresh and focused with the volume one expects from the premier cru delivered on the final third. This is brimming with great potential even if it might be predestined to fall under the shadow of the outstanding Malconsorts. (NM)

(13.2% alcohol): Good full red. Captivating perfume combines raspberry, Oriental spices, minerals and cocoa powder. Wonderfully sweet but tightly wound, offering a terrific core of sappy red berries and spices framed by sound acidity. Finishes with a subtle saline touch. (ST)
