Tasting Notes

Huge, very structured, 100% whole-bunch and quite opened aromatically thanks to that, however it is the intensity of flavour that is outstanding here, Very juicy and ripe black cherry complemented by black pepper, a hint of clove and a savoury finish.

Scores

"The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru les Champonnets contains close to 55% whole bunch fruit and underwent less pigeage and more remontage this year. It is matured in around 35% new oak. It has lively black fruit on the nose laced with cedar and mint aromas that lend it complexity and personality. The palate is medium-bodied with quite tensile tannins and a fine line of acidity. There is a sense of plushness to the mouthfeel, with plenty of vibrant red fruit toward the finish. Great stuff! This is on par with the domaine's Grand Cru."

"There is just enough reduction present to push the earthy dark berry fruit aromas to the background. The restrained, even brooding medium-bodied flavors possess fine volume and a lovely bead of minerality on the intense, driving and robust finish that is firmly structured and mildly austere yet there is only a trace of rusticity. Patience will definitely be required here as this will not be a good candidate for early consumption. *Outstanding*"
