TASTING NOTES

Elanto Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023 is a masterful expression of one of Australia’s most promising new vineyards, showcasing the unique character of five distinct Pinot Noir lieu-dits: Vertex, Ironstone, Chicory, Kilnside, and Basalt. Each vineyard parcel was meticulously harvested and vinified separately, allowing the individual terroirs to shine through in this elegant blend.

The winemaking process emphasizes precision and tradition. Grapes were chilled immediately after picking, then carefully sorted and destemmed into concrete vats, with a small percentage (3-5%) of whole bunches included to enhance complexity. A cold soak preceded natural fermentation, which took place in vats over 25 to 30 days on skins, followed by gentle pressing. The wine matured for 11 months in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barriques, undergoing malolactic conversion in late spring to soften acidity and add richness. The bottling features a Diam 30 closure, preserving freshness and aging potential.

"Never in a million years would I pick the vine age given the detail and complexity here," praised Jane Faulkner, highlighting the wine’s remarkable depth and finesse. Campbell Mattinson called it "an exciting debut, with an even more exciting future." These accolades reflect Elanto’s commitment to quality and the vineyard’s exceptional potential.

This vintage benefits from a favorable growing season in the region, characterized by balanced temperatures and optimal ripening conditions, resulting in vibrant aromatics and finely tuned tannins. The wine offers a captivating bouquet of red cherries, subtle spice, and earthy undertones, complemented by a silky texture and a long, refined finish.

Elanto Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023 is a sophisticated choice for those seeking a premium Australian Pinot Noir that combines meticulous craftsmanship with expressive terroir-driven character.

Never in a million years would I pick the vine age given the detail and complexity here. Fruit off four-year-old vines. Quite astonishing and yet, proof is in the glass. Full of heady aromatics, all florals and wood spice with flavours of dark cherries, cherry compote, and poached rhubarb, but it’s not at all fruity as it also comes with a hint of charred radicchio and Italian-bitter herbs. There’s an energy across the just medium-bodied palate, a little sinewy yet savoury through and through with the fine, and plentiful, tannins taking charge as it finishes long and convincingly.

There’s a lot going on with this Pinot Noir but it manages to feel effortless. Seamless is the word; finished is another. Campari-like herbs, roasted nuts, earth, undergrowth and sweet black cherries, the latter deep-set in Pinot Noir terms. There’s an excellent framework of tannin, firm and velvety at once, dry strings splayed out across a mesh made of hazelnuts. This wine became more expansive as it rested in the glass. This is the first Pinot Noir grown and made from this vineyard. It’s an exciting debut, with an even more exciting future.

Where the inaugural Elanto Chardonnay is notable for its intensity, the Pinot is notable for its complexity. Expressive, dark aromas, damp red soil, Damson plum, bold and brambly, layers of flavour tumble across the tongue. Doesn't remotely taste like it's from a south- easterly facing coastal vineyard in a cool, late vintage. Not showing the fast-tracked concentration of young, high-density vines in the same way as the Chardonnay, and is a little loose-knit now, but has enormous potential and will pull focus beautifully in the bottle.
