TASTING NOTES

Gibson Burkes Hill 2021 Shiraz Cellar Pack presents a rare opportunity to own a limited-edition release from one of Barossa’s most respected winemakers, Rob Gibson, an ex-Penfolds viticulturist. This single vineyard Shiraz from the renowned Burkes Hill site in Eden Valley captures the essence of cool-climate elegance and the unique terroir of a vineyard established in 1965.

The 2021 vintage showcases a dense core of luscious blackcurrant fruit, complemented by subtle layers of spicy clove, black pepper, and a distinct mineral acidity. This Shiraz is crafted with meticulous care, fermented in small open fermenters with hand plunging and basket pressing into new and seasoned French oak hogsheads, resulting in a wine with superb length, fine tannins, and a pure fruit expression that lingers on the palate.

Burkes Hill vineyard, situated at approximately 430 meters above sea level on an east-facing slope, is celebrated for its diverse soil profiles and microclimates, offering complexity and depth to the wine. The vineyard’s dry-grown vines reflect a philosophy of multi-site blending, emphasizing origin and authenticity in every bottle.

This limited-edition cellar pack is housed in a beautifully crafted timber case, each individually numbered and signed by Rob Gibson and acclaimed Barossa photographer Dragan Radocaj. Included is a museum-quality panorama of the Burkes Hill vineyard valued at $550, making this pack an exceptional collector’s item or a distinguished gift for wine connoisseurs.

The inaugural release of a single-vineyard shiraz from the Burke's Hill vineyard comes from the very strong '21 Eden Valley vintage, and it's a beauty. Plush satsuma plum and forest berry fruits, exotic spice, roasting meats, sage, bay leaf, cedar and gingersnaps. Composed and calm, with a traditional structure, powdery, granitic tannins and a bright line before a touch of pastille on the exit.

Dark, inky and opaque in the glass. Complex aromas of blackberry, mulberry, satsuma plum, Asian spice, clove and cola. The palate is fleshy, brooding and full of dark fruited goodness. Plum, pudding spice, ferrous earth and bramble. The textured and layered tannins and punchy acidity bring it all home nicely 29 MAY 2024

A supple swirl of dark plum, dark cherries, rye bread and cocoa powder. Some dry herbs and turned earth lurking underneath. It's refined and assured in the mouth, medium bodied and layered, supported by deftly handled oak, and shaped by finely knit tannins. It proves you can make a statement without shouting.
