Koomilya GT Block Shiraz 2021 is a masterful expression of heritage and terroir, crafted from a single block of 33-year-old Shiraz vines grafted on Gewurztraminer rootstock planted in 1974 by Jill and Don Cant. Nestled on ancient, dark grey slaty siltstone layered with ironstone at 116 meters altitude, this vineyard block faces south, offering ideal conditions for producing a wine of exceptional depth and character.
Hand harvested on February 27th, 2021, the grapes underwent gentle processing with 20% whole bunches retained during crushing. After spontaneous fermentation lasting 16 days on skins, the wine was pressed and settled in tank before malolactic fermentation in a combination of a 2800L three-year-old French oak vat and a two-year-old extra-large French oak puncheon. Bottled unfined on October 28th, 2022, this Shiraz is a testament to meticulous craftsmanship and respect for natural winemaking processes.
Flavour profile reveals energetic aromas harmonizing red cherry, raspberry, and cream with crushed spice notes. Subtle hints of iodine, bourbon barrels, faint woodsmoke, cassia bark, cedar, and clove add complexity, evoking the comforting scent of a rainy weekend afternoon. On the palate, dark perfume builds with tension and charm, while supple flavours rise and fall gracefully, culminating in a silky finish. Pomegranate molasses enliven the tannins, creating a vibrant dance of sweet red fruit flavours.
