TASTING NOTES
Leeuwin Estate is one of the founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district. In 1972, legendary Napa Valley winemaker, Robert Mondavi, first identified the future site of the Leeuwin vineyard as being ideal for the production of premium wine and provided early mentorship to Denis and Tricia Horgan who founded Leeuwin Estate in 1974. The initial vineyards were planted by hand over a five year period from 1975. Maintaining a team of highly skilled and dedicated winemakers, Leeuwin Estate is now under the direction of two generations of the founding family. Bright, fragrant and floral, the nose has an abundance of limes, lemons and Cape gooseberries. Beneath subtleties of nettle, Thai basil and lemongrass enhance the depth and layers on the nose. Finely tuned, textured and layered, the palate has a bright fruit spectrum centred on quince, lemon and lime. There is gentle weight through the mid-palate, creating dimension with a structural yet seamless acid spine.

I have to say I think this is the best Art Series savvy yet released. It combines the beautiful aromatic nuances evident immediately with a beautifully crafted textural palate. The palate is sublime with its rich intensity and centration of fruit lifted and revealed with a minerally acidity. That texture comes from 30% barrel fermentation in one-year-old French oak barriques and then four months fermentation in barrels. The blend of these with some tank fermented components has created an ideal expression of this variety.

Pink grapefruit, gooseberry, a little spicy and floral, aniseed and tomato leaf. It’s flavoursome with a light powdery chalky texture, fresh plum and gooseberry, a kiss of spiced oak, and appropriate varietal green bits. Finish is good too. Balanced. Altogether pleasing.
