Tasting Notes

Mayer Chardonnay 2024 is a quintessential expression of Yarra Valley’s terroir, crafted with the signature precision and purity that defines Timo Mayer’s winemaking philosophy. This Chardonnay is fermented and aged for six months in old hogsheads before being transferred to stainless steel tanks, emphasizing freshness and clarity without malolactic fermentation or lees stirring.

The result is a wine that reveals pristine citrus flavors, including vibrant notes of grapefruit and lemon zest, complemented by a delicate mineral backbone and a subtle textural complexity derived from its barrel maturation. The 2024 vintage introduces a touch more richness on the mid-palate while maintaining a sharp, focused character that keeps the wine fresh and dynamic.

Vines are planted in the traditional Burgundian layout, a testament to the meticulous vineyard management that contributes to this wine’s refined structure and balance. Critically acclaimed, it received 95 points from Mike Bennie of The Wine Front, who praised it as “a full on style done fully well.” The wine offers incredible power and purity, with an added layer of complexity unique to Timo Mayer’s craftsmanship.

Known for its streamlined and exacting style, this Chardonnay is made to mature gracefully, though its immediate appeal makes resisting the first bottle a challenge. The Yarra Valley’s cool climate and diverse soils provide an ideal environment for Chardonnay grapes, resulting in wines that combine elegance with vibrant acidity.

Scores

95 / 100

"Here come the hot stepper. Quite the intense and rich flavour profile here, though with good cut and thrust alongside. Magic of Mayer. Scents and flavours of lemon curd, grapefruit, red apple juice, green mango, a touch of green almond and a big squeeze of lime. Dashes of sea spray and ginger here too. You could say generally there’s lots on here. A suggestion of parmesan cheese funk in the mix too. Slippery texture, some chalkiness to finish. Lots of great concentration and the palate staining length is impressive. A full on style done fully well."

"From Hans and Anna Orth's vineyard in Coldstream. Fermented in seasoned hogsheads for six months and three months in stainless. A bright green gold. A touch richer than last year's wine but, interestingly, with more tension, too. Aromas of ripe pear and nectarines together with a gentle nuttiness. The palate is pure fruited and even, finishing saline, nutty and long."
