TASTING NOTES

Neldner Road 'Kraehe' Shiraz 2021 is a masterful expression of South Australia’s finest terroir, blending the rich heritage of Eden Valley and Barossa Valley Shiraz vines. Cultivated from vines aged over 40 and 60 years respectively, this wine showcases the meticulous craftsmanship of Dave and Callum Powell, who maintain a hands-on, artisanal approach throughout the winemaking process.

Fermented in concrete vats to preserve purity and texture, the wine is then matured in large oak foudres, allowing for a subtle integration of oak without overpowering the fruit character. The 2021 vintage is celebrated as one of the best by Dave Powell himself, who describes it as the "best vintage I've ever had" and the "best wines I've ever made."

This Shiraz captivates with incredible length and depth, delivering a complex bouquet of dark berries, spice, and savory undertones. Its layered palate and refined structure reflect the unique climate and soil composition of Eden and Barossa Valleys, regions renowned for producing bold yet elegant Shiraz wines.

Accolades include a rare 100-point score from esteemed critic Jeremy Oliver, marking only the second perfect rating in his 30-plus year career. This recognition underscores the wine’s exceptional quality and aging potential.

Perfect for collectors and connoisseurs seeking a premium Australian Shiraz, the Neldner Road 'Kraehe' 2021 stands as a testament to patient craftsmanship and regional authenticity.

Scores

100/100

An opulent, heady, smoky and mineral bouquet of cassis, blackberries, redcurrants and bluebrries is lifted by notes of cracked pepper, roasted chestnuts and dark flowers, all supported by the most remarkable of charry, tight-knit oak. There are also suggestions of eastern spices and old Puer tea. It’s impossibly intense and generous, but simultaneously fine and restrained, delivering an elegant, effortless presence of handsomely oaked vivacious dark fruits backed by notes of smoke, minerals and briar, all wound around a fine-grained spine of artfully integrated drying tannins. Ready to enjoy any time over the next 40 years, it’s nothing short of a masterpiece.
