TASTING NOTES

Oltre Il Vallo Grappa Aged Selezione Privata NV 43% 700ml offers a sophisticated fusion of Italian tradition and Scottish influence. Crafted in Piedmont, this grappa is distilled using a discontinuous copper steam still and then carefully aged in oak barrels previously housing single malt Scotch whiskies from renowned Islay and Speyside regions. This unique maturation process imparts a subtle smoky and malty character, enriching the warm fruit essence inherent to the grape.

On the palate, Oltre Il Vallo reveals layers of dried apricot, golden raisin, and almond, seamlessly balanced by notes of vanilla, honey, and delicate pastry. A gentle hint of peat and malt emerges with time, adding complexity without overwhelming the senses. At 43% ABV, its silky texture offers a refined mouthfeel, concluding with a long, clean finish accented by citrus peel and toasted nuts.

This grappa is ideal as an elegant after-dinner spirit, polished and fragrant, perfect to enjoy neat in a chilled tulip glass at 12°C or gently poured over a single large ice cube with an orange twist. It pairs beautifully with dark chocolate, hazelnut biscotti, or a rich espresso, allowing the fruit-forward character to shine.

The collaboration between Berta and Diageo, launched in 2010, bridges the Monferrato hills of Piedmont with Scotland’s whisky heritage, resulting in a distinctive spirit that honors both traditions. The careful selection of ex-Scotch casks, including those from Islay and Speyside, adds depth and nuance, making this grappa a rare and refined choice for connoisseurs seeking complexity and elegance.
