Tasting Notes

In Chablis, Vaucoupin sees life through white-tinted glasses. From a distance, it looks like an ocean of white limestone, blanketed in some places by dry white clay. Tillage is quite challenging due to shallow Kimmeridgian marls, so patience is crucial in taming this vast terroir. Coming from the right bank of the Serein with a South-west exposure, you could be impressed by its vivacity and freshness.

The nose is fruity, elegant and offers a slight gourmandise. It reveals notes of ripe lemon, ripe clementine ans slight hints of yellow plum associated with a hint of fresh peach as well as a subtle hint of zests.

The palate is fruity, fresh, well-balanced, well-built, racy and offers a beautiful acid frame, a beautiful suavity, elegance, a slight straigthness, roundness as well as a beautiful matter. In the mouth this wine expresses notes of ripe lemon, ripe peach and slight notes of clementine associated with hints of flowers as well as a subtle hint of apple, flint and a subtle hint of ripe mirabelle.

Scores

"This is a fine and elegant Chablis displaying bright notes of lemon and white peach with a subtle cracker biscuit nuance. The palate displays nice fruitiness offset superbly by the fine, crisp and zippy acidity, creating the perfect structure and frame to support a long, elegant and finely honed finish. It finishes with a subtle gunmetal character that completes an excellent wine."

"The Robert Goulley Chablis range is part of the Domaine Gueguen empire, based in the region. Premier Cru Chablis is an underappreciated gem, these days – once, it was very much top of mind (look only to the wines of which Charles Dickens wrote, and drank, for evidence). Vaucoupin is a highly regarded Cru. The Kimmeridgian clay is swallow here and the result is a degree of elegance not always seen in other top Crus in the region. Deep lemon, there are exotic spice notes with florals and citrus. This is a finely balanced example with the typical Chardonnay notes of white peaches and melon interwoven with hints of lemon spongecake. There is a seamless structure to this wine, a hint of a creamy note on the palate, juicy acidity and very good length. This is a fine example of Vaucoupin for enjoying over the next six to eight years."

"The estate has a very long history of wine in Chablis, today it is managed by third generation Frederic Goulley and his wife Céline Brocard (daughter of Jean Marc Brocard) and made alongside the wines at Domaine Gueguen. Certified organic production. From a south west exposure site on shallow Kimmeridgian soils, vine age is around 40 years of age. Direct pressing, cold settling and malolactic fermentation completed in stainless steel. The wine spends 6 months on fine lees. This is lively with lemon pith, green melon and white apple flesh. Some dainty white flowers and creamed honey. A hint of dried fennel seed and white pepper. The beauty of this wine is in the graceful way the natural acidity continues to give over long moments. Slippery even. This is screaming for some white mould cheese, oozy and spread over a crusty loaf of bread. Drink now or will cellar well for another 3-4 years."
