TASTING NOTES

Yarra Yering Chardonnay 2023 is a masterful expression of one of Australia’s most revered wine regions. Crafted from 50-year-old vines under the expert guidance of acclaimed winemaker Sarah Crowe, this Chardonnay embodies both complexity and finesse. Recognized within the industry, Yarra Yering’s dedication to excellence is reflected in accolades such as James Halliday’s Winemaker of the Year 2017 and The Real Review’s Winery of the Year 2021.

This single-vineyard wine captivates with aromas of grapefruit pith, lemon zest, and fresh ginger, offering a vibrant and fruit-driven bouquet. On the palate, it reveals layers of oyster shells, wet rocks, sea spray, and orchard fruits, harmoniously balanced with a pillowy fruit weight and a refreshing green apple crunch. The wine’s energy is palpable, driven by a pithy character and a slippery texture on the back palate that delivers extraordinary length and carry.

The structure is enhanced by an extremely fine-grained oak tannin framework, which supports the fruit beautifully and lingers elegantly on the finish. This Chardonnay showcases a unique combination of weight, texture, and precision, making it a standout example of the Yarra Valley’s cool climate expression.

Known for its cool maritime influence, the Yarra Valley region imparts distinctive mineral and citrus notes, which are evident in this vintage. The 2023 harvest benefited from ideal ripening conditions, resulting in a wine of remarkable purity and balance.

Bright light to mid yellow colour; there are youthful apple, pear and steely mineral aromas, the palate is taut and refined, tensioned and properly dry, with an appetising finish and aftertaste. Tight but concentrated. An impressive wine: lovely flavour, freshness, focus and persistence. Beautiful now and will reward cellaring.

From the two original chardonnay blocks. Barrel fermented in barriques (25% new) and zero mlf. While the Crécy chardonnay is plusher and more open knit, this beautifully crafted wine is tighter and more mineral in style. Subtle scents of stone fruits and fresh sea spray together with a gentle nuttiness. Beautifully balanced and structured, finishing saline and very long. A superb wine that, while good now, is 2–3 years away, at least, from beginning to reach its zenith.
