TASTING NOTES

Yarra Yering Dry Red No 3 2022 is a masterful expression of classic Portuguese varietals meticulously cultivated in the renowned Yarra Valley, Victoria. This elegant red blend features 35% Touriga Naçional, 35% Tinta Cão, 12% Tinta Roriz, 7% Tinta Amarela, 6% Alvarelhão, and 5% Sousão, sourced from the 1990 New Territories planting on a rocky terraced hillside, which imparts remarkable minerality and depth.

The winemaking process honors tradition and precision. Hand-picked fruit undergoes a unique field blend style fermentation, retaining whole berries to preserve complexity. Initial tannin extraction is achieved through gentle foot treading in the style of a traditional Portuguese lagar, enhancing texture and structure. The wine is then softly pressed and matured for 10 months in old oak barrels, allowing the vibrant fruit and refined tannins to harmonize beautifully.

This vintage is drinking beautifully now, while promising further evolution for up to 8 years under optimal cellaring conditions. The 2022 Dry Red No 3 has earned critical acclaim, including 98 points from the 2025 Halliday Wine Companion, a Trophy for Best Red Blend at the 2023 Melbourne Royal Wine Awards, and recognition as a Merit Wine by The Real Review. Yarra Yering was also named 2021 Winery of the Year by Huon Hooke, underscoring the estate’s commitment to excellence.

With its rich bouquet of dark berries, subtle spice, and elegant tannins, this wine offers a sophisticated palate that reflects the unique terroir of the Yarra Valley. It is a distinguished choice for collectors and connoisseurs seeking an award-winning red blend that balances tradition with modern finesse.

Scores

97/100

A blend of 38/30/10/10/6/6% touriga nacional/tinta cão/tinta amarela/tinta roriz/alvarelhão/sousão, all sourced from 1990 plantings. A perennial multi-trophy winner and the '23 is no different. A gorgeous bright crimson purple. Floral with aromas of damson plums, morello cherries, floral notes and incense. Medium bodied, elegant and spicy in the mouth. Great tannins. One of a kind. I love it.
