TASTING NOTES

Yeringberg Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 represents the pinnacle of premium winemaking from one of Victoria’s most esteemed vineyards. Crafted only in exceptional years, this vintage reflects the unique terroir of Yarra Valley, renowned for producing elegant and structured Cabernet Sauvignons.

Handpicked on 29 March and 1 April 2022, the grapes come from the original 1999 plantings, ensuring depth and complexity. The meticulous process includes hand sorting, destemming, and fermentation in small open-top tanks with gentle hand plunging over 16 days on skins. This careful handling preserves the intense varietal character and structure.

The wine was aged for 21 months in French oak barriques, with approximately 30% new oak, imparting subtle layers of complexity without overpowering the fruit. This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon offers a refined and tensile expression of the vintage, combining hallmark Yeringberg elegance with a powerful, structured palate.

Aromas of blackberry, black olive, and dark chocolate are accented by intriguing notes of iodine and tobacco, creating a deep and inviting nose. On the palate, the wine reveals a savory, almost primal intensity balanced by fresh acidity and a vibrant lift that shapes a long, elegant finish.

Key Highlights:

  • Produced only in the best Cabernet vintages (2017, 2019, and 2022)
  • Just the third consecutive vintage of this single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Rated 97 points by Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion

The 2022 vintage benefited from ideal growing conditions in the Yarra Valley, known for its cool climate and diverse soils, which contribute to the wine’s balance of power and finesse. This Cabernet Sauvignon stands as a testament to Yeringberg’s commitment to quality and tradition, making it a distinguished choice for collectors and connoisseurs alike.

Scores

97/100

Just the third straight cabernet made, and from grapes planted in '99. A deepish bright crimson purple. A touch more closed than the Yeringberg blend, but still with a lovely core of dark fruits, together with cedar, violets and a hint of iodine on the perfumed and captivating bouquet. The medium-bodied and firmly structured palate is beautifully balanced but with those, firm, fine-grained tannins, this will require some patience to fulfil its potential.

Scores

96/100

Intense small berried black and red fruits, quite some violet perfume, pencils and tobacco, perhaps a little aniseed. It’s medium-bodied, quite ferrous and pencilly, the old liquid ‘mineral’ feel that great Cabernet often sports, compact and fine-grained tannin grip, freshness and excellent length, some redcurrant peeking through in the aftertaste along with some more savoury/earthy character. Beautiful wine. So good.
