TASTING NOTES

"An incredibly elegant wine marked by notes of saffron and tart overtones reminiscent of apricot jam. The rich and well-structured nose reveals candied fruit nuances of quince and bitter orange, underpinned by a minty freshness. This Château d’Yquem is powerful, lively and particularly well-balanced on the palate. Seven decades on, it still continues to improve, its aromatic bouquet growing richer and more varied as it prepares to become a century old.

By immersing you in the universe of this great wine, we are offering a unique and memorable experience which perfectly reflects this timeless vintage. You will be taken on a guided tour of the estate, accompanied by five people of your choice, followed by a tasting of three vintages from the 21st century. We will be delighted to personalise your cherished wine case at your request." - Chateau D'Yquem

Today, I'd also add 2008 to the 2007 cited above; not quite as dense and powerful, but with absolutely stunning precision and finesse. In recent years, Yquem in particular, and Sauternes in general, have produced wines of a quality and style that are unique worldwide. 2007 is the current high point. This wine, too, should be allowed to rest a little longer, even if the Sauternes of recent years can be tasted practically from the very first day of their life, much like great Champagnes. Yet they can age forever and then develop the complexity inherent in, say, the great 1955, which I rank even higher than the legendary 1937 vintage. Lucky are those who own a bottle of it!

Darker in color than I would have expected, it was on the deep, dark, amber side of caramel, or mahogany, don't let the color scare you off. The aromatics sizzled with coffee, caramel, butterscotch, nuts buttered tropical fruit and honey. Thick, rich and fat, yes, the wine could have used a bit more freshness, but the finish was long, intense, sweet and packed with flavor. I know d'Yquem is shockingly expensive, but when Yquem just starts to get going, at perhaps 40-50-60 years of age, the other Sauternes are usually left in the dust.

This was the colour of a particularly dark Oloroso sherry – a sort of glowing chestnut colour – and actually tasted rather like sweet chestnuts. Despite its looks, it was amazingly fresh and zesty with a savoury molasses edge. It finished drier than some other bottles of 1955 Yquem recalled by the donor, whose birthday we were celebrating.
