TASTING NOTES

If you're wondering why this domaine has earned such a strong reputation, Silex offers a clear answer. It's the flagship wine from Dagueneau, known for its purity, strong mineral character, and long ageing potential. Named after the flint-rich soils it's grown on, Silex comes from north-facing slopes on the hill of Saint-Andelain, where the vines are between 35 and 65 years old. Yields are kept low to ensure concentration, and the wine is fermented and aged in a mix of Dagueneau’s unique cigar-shaped barrels and neutral glass Wineglobes, which help reduce the need for added sulphur. The result is a wine of depth and precision that often needs five to ten years to fully open up.

The 2022 Silex is not a lot of fun upon release; dry and tense, it really needs time to mellow. There's flesh from the clay element of its clay-flint soils, which is felt on entry but tightens up as it moves through the mouth. This remains a wine of drive, firmness and upright structure; it speaks of the place it comes from rather than its variety. Aromatics are almost a forgotten element; this is a wine about structure and texture. There is a lemony, wild goat cheese-like note and a distinct flinty whiff. Silex, after all, means flint in French. - Rebecca Gibb MW
