Tasting Notes

The 2022 Small Lot Pinot Noir from Parducci is a wine that knows what it is and leans into it with confidence. It does not pretend to be Burgundy, nor does it attempt the power games of Sonoma or Santa Barbara. Instead, it settles into its Mendocino roots with a soft voice and an easy rhythm. The vintage brought warmth, but not excess. The fruit shows ripeness without overstepping, the tannins are gentle, and the whole wine feels as though it was built for the table rather than the tasting room.

In the glass, the colour is a medium ruby, slightly translucent, with a glow that hints at both ripeness and restraint. The aromatics are clean and inviting, a warm basket of red cherry, raspberry jam and just a touch of cola spice. There is a faint earthy whisper beneath the fruit, something like dry leaves or cocoa powder, giving the wine a touch of grounding. A subtle hint of vanilla and baking spice rounds out the nose, the mark of oak that has been used with a light but familiar hand.

On the palate, the wine delivers softness and ease. This is not a Pinot that asks for analysis. It moves smoothly, with red fruit taking centre stage. Cherry and ripe strawberry are the main players, with a gentle note of plum skin adding depth. The acidity is mellow, enough to keep the wine bright but not enough to add tension. Tannins are barely there, soft and rounded, offering shape without grip. There is a touch of spice through the mid-palate, something like nutmeg or cinnamon, which adds warmth and familiarity. The finish is short to medium, tapering into a pleasant echo of red fruit and sweet oak.

What this wine lacks in complexity, it makes up for in charm. It is Pinot Noir for Tuesday night pasta, for pizza with friends, for grilled chicken or roast vegetables on a weeknight when you want something that tastes good and does not ask questions. It is the kind of wine that works just as well poured into a mason jar as it does in a wide Burgundy bowl. Serve it slightly cool, let it breathe in the glass, and do not overthink it.

The 2022 Parducci Small Lot Pinot Noir is not a collector’s wine, and it does not try to be. It is a reminder that there is still a place for well-made, approachable Pinot that is generous without being cloying, and easy without being dull. It is a wine that plays in the middle ground, and that is where its comfort lies. Honest, clean and thoroughly drinkable, it delivers what it promises and leaves you satisfied. Sometimes, that is exactly what is needed.

"Sassy and classy, this bottling is reminiscent of your breakfast berry bowl, with Greek yogurt, bunches of fresh fruit, grated lemon zest, fresh mint and the morning fog. Enjoy with your favorite grilled protein."
