TASTING NOTES

Secret Deal MV McLaren Vale Shiraz 2021 is a distinguished expression of Australia's rich winemaking heritage, showcasing the depth and elegance of Shiraz from one of the country's premier regions. This limited-release wine, crafted from Shiraz vines dating back to the 1950s, represents a rare blend of tradition and modern finesse, with only about 600 dozen bottles produced.

Boasting 97 points from Sam Kim and 95 points from Ken Gargett of Winepilot.com, this vintage captures the essence of McLaren Vale's unique terroir. The region is renowned for its Mediterranean climate, which contributes to the vibrant blue and black fruit profile characteristic of this wine. Unlike typical Australian Shiraz that often leans towards higher alcohol levels, this wine maintains a refined 14% alcohol, enhancing its balance, freshness, and aging potential.

The winemaking approach honors the classic Shiraz style with a subtle nod to contemporary preferences. It is neither an over-oaked, jammy powerhouse nor a delicate, perfumed wine, but rather a harmonious fusion of both. The use of high-quality American oak barrels imparts gentle vanilla notes that add complexity without overpowering the fruit. This choice is distinctive in a landscape dominated by French oak, providing a unique sensory experience.

Old vines and low yields contribute to the wine's remarkable concentration and silky texture. The palate reveals vibrant layers of dark berries, supported by smooth tannins and lively acidity, promising excellent longevity. Fruit is sourced from a combination of owned vineyards and select premium McLaren Vale growers, ensuring exceptional quality and consistency.

This Shiraz is a testament to McLaren Vale's capacity to produce wines with both power and elegance, making it a prized addition for collectors and enthusiasts seeking a wine with depth, character, and age-worthy structure.

Opulent and gloriously complex, the wine shows blackberry, vanillin oak, cocoa, and warm spice aromas on the nose. The palate is equally impressive with excellent concentration and persistence, complemented by plush texture and beautifully melded tannins. Mouth-filling and seamless with a superbly long, velvety finish. At its best: now to 2039.

his absolutely cracking McLaren Vale Shiraz saw maturation in new French oak barrels, sourced from the famous Troncais first in France. This is a star of the range for me. It is assisted in coming from such a superb vintage – a year that absolutely must be well represented in every serious cellar. A bruised plum hue, the wine opens with some toasty, vanillin oak notes, but they are well handled and add to the overall impression of a cracking red. There are aromas of chocolate, coffee beans, mulberries, dried herbs, plums and licorice. A wine exhibiting regional plushness, this is quintessential McLaren Vale Shiraz. Supple and seamless, balanced and with juicy acidity, there is serious length here, with a gentle fade and lingering finish.
