TASTING NOTES

Experience the elegance and heritage of the 2023 Tyrrell’s Vat 47 Winemaker's Selection Chardonnay, a distinguished expression from Australia’s pioneering Chardonnay producer. First released in 1971, Vat 47 remains a benchmark for Hunter Valley Chardonnay, crafted from the historic Short Flat vineyard where original vines were planted in 1968.

This vintage benefits from an exceptional growing season characterized by mild temperatures and even ripening, allowing for meticulous hand-picking of premium fruit. Fermented and matured in French oak barriques—with a portion new—the wine achieves a harmonious balance of subtle spice and creamy texture without overshadowing its vibrant fruit profile.

In the glass, the 2023 Vat 47 displays a delicate pale straw hue with hints of green. The nose is refined and inviting, revealing layers of white peach, nectarine, and citrus blossom, complemented by nuanced notes of lemon curd, flint, and fine oak seasoning. These aromas are complex yet understated, reflecting the wine’s quiet confidence.

The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully structured, showcasing core flavors of stone fruit and grapefruit, lifted by crisp, clean acidity. A gentle creaminess from oak and lees contact adds depth, while a distinct mineral edge and a long, savory finish highlight the wine’s aging potential. This Chardonnay is crafted to evolve gracefully over 8 to 12 years, with future notes of nougat, hazelnut, and honeyed citrus emerging over time.

Perfectly suited to a variety of dishes, pair this Chardonnay with classic roast chicken with tarragon, grilled lobster, or a creamy mushroom risotto. Its refined balance of richness and lively acidity makes it an exceptionally versatile choice for sophisticated dining experiences.

The 2023 Tyrrell’s Vat 47 Chardonnay is a masterful blend of tradition and modern winemaking excellence from the Hunter Valley, embodying elegance, complexity, and enduring appeal. A true reference point for Australian Chardonnay enthusiasts seeking a wine that delivers both immediate enjoyment and rewarding cellaring potential.

An established star in the Australian wine landscape, and rightly so, for its purity, complexity and power. Made from hand-picked grapes sourced entirely from the Short Flat vineyard, planted by Murray Tyrrell. The lemony fruit is intense and the palate is beautifully expansive, textural and deeply satisfying, with barely perceptible savoury winemaking details that embellish and enrich the wine without a shred of dominance. The flavours build to an impressive crescendo, finishing with remarkable purity, energy and deliciousness. An outstanding chardonnay – one of Australia's best. Pure class.

This is going to be a very good Vat 47. I’m sure of that. Gets about 10% new oak. This wine is well represented on wine lists in NSW, and despite having to pay a premium, I often find myself ordering a bottle.

A little struck match, green pear and apple, nougat/almond, lime zest, spice. White peach in with light citrus flavour, fine grip, lovely even flow, fine chalky grip, long with a little green olive and lemon peel cinch of bitterness. Such energy here, and it’s tight too. It’s a classic Vat 47, and hence, give it a few years in bottle before drinking. Terrific.

The 2023 Vat 47 Chardonnay is spicy and taut, with pineapple husk and white pepper, scratched lemon and pith, brine and chalk. The wine is tense and nervy at this stage, although the weight of the fruit sits at the back of the palate and draws out over the long finish. Chalky phenolics shape the finish. This is a really impressive wine here. It is gorgeous, saline and even a little febrile, but good for that. 13.5% alcohol's sealed under screw cap.

Extremely floral, with lavender, pears and stones on the nose. Medium-bodied with a superfine texture, phenolics and an extremely long and bright palate. Complex and subtle at the end with a hint of cloves. A sophisticated semillon. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
