TASTING NOTES

Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 is a distinguished expression from South Australia’s celebrated Coonawarra region, known worldwide for its premium Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Crafted by Wynns Coonawarra Estate, a respected name since 1951, this iconic Black Label reflects decades of winemaking expertise and a deep connection to the region’s unique terroir.

The 2016 vintage highlights the signature characteristics of Coonawarra’s famous terra rossa soil, which imparts remarkable depth and complexity. The region’s cool climate and rich red earth contribute to vibrant dark fruit flavors, balanced acidity, and refined tannins, resulting in an elegant and age-worthy wine.

Rated 95 points by James Halliday, one of Australia’s most influential wine critics, this Cabernet Sauvignon is highly acclaimed for its concentration, structure, and finesse. Sourced from a premium private cellar, each bottle guarantees exceptional quality and provenance.

On the palate, expect rich layers of blackberry, cassis, and blackcurrant, complemented by subtle notes of cedar, mint, and fine oak. The polished finish and harmonious balance showcase both the tradition of Coonawarra Cabernet and Wynns’ winemaking mastery.

Whether enjoyed now or cellared for future enjoyment, the Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 embodies the essence of one of Australia’s premier wine estates and stands as a cornerstone of South Australian wine heritage.

This is sumptuous, savoury cabernet at a ridiculous price. The tannins are pristine and tight of grain; the acidity fresh and juicy; the oak embellishing rather than smothering; the fruit, an effortless flow of currant, leaf, mint, bitter chocolate and a punctuation of bay leaf and a herbal potpourri, staining the long finish.

It’s a shapely, structured wine of fine tannin, lithe but flavoursome fruit character, exceptional length and a general ambience of sophistication. It’s perhaps not as taut as some releases have been of late, but there is a svelte feel and the wine offers depth and satisfying concentration. Tannins start tight and spread in a fan, there’s lively acidity playing underneath keeping things fresh. Each sip reveals a bit more, until critical mass, and then you get the gist that this wine has a little extra heft, spice of mocha oak and perky, tight-skinned, dark berry fruit flavours come to the fore. It’s wonderful drinking, perhaps earlier drinking too.
