TASTING NOTES

Xavier Goodridge Avon Pinot Noir 2024 offers an exquisite expression of Pinot Noir, crafted from a single hectare of MV6 vines planted in 1987 at the renowned Avon Vineyard in Maffra, Gippsland. This limited-production wine benefits from old vines that yield smaller bunches, resulting in remarkable concentration and depth.

Hand-picked in small 15kg baskets and meticulously hand-sorted, the grapes undergo a gentle 25-day fermentation to preserve the purity of fruit and delicate structure. The wine matures for 10 months in French oak barriques, 30% of which are new, enhancing complexity while maintaining elegance. Bottled in early 2025, it captures the unique terroir and vintage character with precision.

The bouquet is complex and inviting, unveiling a vibrant mix of spice, fresh herbs, and an array of red berries. Intriguing notes reminiscent of Italian amaro, such as Campari and red vermouth, mingle with Maraschino cherry, sweet basil, spearmint, cinnamon bark, nutmeg, and kola nut. This layered aroma profile entices the senses with both freshness and warmth.

On the palate, the texture is leafy and chewy, supported by firm tannins that provide structure and balance. The mid-palate bursts with concentrated flavors, leading to a lingering aromatic finish featuring a distinctive sour-bitter blood orange nuance. This wine is simply mouth-wateringly delicious and showcases the finesse and complexity achievable from Gippsland’s cool climate terroir.

Scores

95/100

A charismatic wine of saline minerality, lots of cashew and hazelnut savouriness, green apple, lime, just ripe nectarine and hints of nougat and vanilla. Amongst all this, complexity from a kind of almost white mushroom and crushed rock element. A lot going on here. It feels very complex, layered and intense. A bit of a nod in the direction of wines from Burgundy’s Valette or Cossard. Essentially, you have a very unique, quite sumptuous expression with plenty of uplifting freshness underlying. ‘My kinda wine’, I say, but should hit the mark for many seeking alt and quality expressions of chardonnay.
