Bordeaux En Primeur - Preview of the 2023 Vintage
"The 2023 vintage embodies classic characteristics," remarked Eric Kohler, the technical director of Chateau Lafite Rothschild.
"I've had the privilege of tasting numerous young Bordeaux vintages over my career. This marks my 41st year of sampling Bordeaux straight from the barrel. My journey began with the 1982 vintage when I started as a young taster for The Wine Spectator. Since then, I've faithfully reviewed every vintage from Bordeaux. Comparatively, few vintages stand shoulder to shoulder with 2023, such as 2019 or 2016, along with older gems like 2001, 1996, or 1995. Each of these boasted ripe, balanced fruit, firm tannins, and a touch of restraint in alcohol content and acidity levels compared to warmer years. However, 2023 stands apart not only due to its unique growing conditions but also owing to advancements in viticulture and winemaking over the past decade. Today's top Bordeaux viticulturists and winemakers demonstrate a level of precision and thoughtfulness that surpasses predecessors," remarked James Suckling.
"People will undoubtedly fall under the spell of 2023 once they taste it," remarked Veronique Sanders, the head of Chateau Haut-Bailly. "It's reminiscent of the allure of 2016 and 2019. One sip, and they're hooked."
Understanding En Primeur
En Primeur represents a longstanding tradition in the French wine market, offering customers the chance to invest in a vintage before it's bottled. While traditionally associated with Bordeaux, this system has expanded to Burgundy, the Rhône Valley, Port, and select New World regions.
Why Invest in En Primeur?
En Primeur offers the advantage of securing sought-after wines before they hit the market, potentially avoiding scarcity and rising prices post-bottling. Buying directly from producers ensures authenticity and control over storage conditions, crucial for wines destined for long-term aging.
While historically, fine wines in limited quantities have appreciated in value, there's no guaranteed return on investment, as wine prices, like other assets, can fluctuate.

Purchasing En Primeur typically secures the best price, often lower than future market prices. Notably, the highly acclaimed 2010 vintage is expected to see significant price increases upon release, although final pricing is not guaranteed.
When comparing prices, it's essential to consider taxes, GST, and import duties, which may not be included in quoted prices and are subject to change.
Securing Rare and Limited Wines
En Primeur allows consumers to secure desired wines in various formats, including bottles, magnums, and halves, particularly crucial for limited-production wines that may become scarce post-release. Each April, Bordeaux becomes a hub for merchants, journalists, and enthusiasts, as they sample the new vintage and determine their assessments before prices are announced.
